What Should I Feed My Dog?

Choosing the right food for your furry friend is crucial for their overall health and well-being. With an abundance of options on the market, however, it can be challenging to make the right choice. Sometimes, you can't see the forest for the trees. But don't worry, Charlie & Jones is here to lend you a hand. Learn more about the benefits of different diets and discover which option best suits your loyal companion's needs.

Raw Meat

A diet that is gaining more recognition for its benefits is raw meat. Dogs' digestive systems are evolutionarily adapted to processing raw meat. Unlike kibble, raw meat retains nutrients optimally because it is not heated.

A raw meat-based diet can significantly contribute to improving your dog's energy and behavior. Moreover, dogs that consume fresh meat have a lower risk of conditions such as arthritis, pancreatitis, dental problems, and parasites. They also develop better resistance to diseases. For dogs with allergies, a fresh meat diet is often beneficial because it contains minimal additives.

Steamed Food

If raw meat is not feasible, a steamed version offers a good middle ground for those who want to stay close to a natural diet but need to consider practical aspects, such as being frequently away from home.

Kibble

If you opt for kibble, it is crucial to carefully check the ingredients. Choose kibble with at least 70% meat, but be aware: this percentage is based on dried meat. Many brands specify the percentage based on fresh meat, which, due to the high moisture content, ultimately yields only about 20% dried meat.

Lower quality kibble often contains predominantly grains and has a low content of animal ingredients. Sometimes, even low-protein ingredients such as feathers, nails, and eyes are added to these kibbles as cheaper sources of animal products.

Avoiding wheat in kibble is also advisable. Wheat, a cheap source of carbohydrates, can lead to blood sugar fluctuations. Instead, choose corn or rice-based kibble for a more balanced diet for your loyal companion. After all, your dog's well-being starts with the right nutrition.

The Best Choice

Now that we've explored the benefits of various food options, it's important to note that ultimately, it's up to each owner to determine what's best for their loyal four-legged friend. Experiment, observe, and find out what your furry companion likes best and what suits their individual needs. The well-being of your pet is always the top priority.
